Cloth Diapering Day One: Daisylyn's First Cloth Diaper
So many friends and family have asked how the cloth diapering is going. Well until today I hadn’t braved the new frontier. As I was again asked this afternoon how the cloth diapering was turning out, I was inspired to get moving. So the next diaper change I dug out the diapers I had gathered so many months ago when I was pregnant.
I found some diaper covers on Craigslist that go over the traditional cotton diapers that were used back in the day. Daisylyn was just too little up until the past week or two. She is now starting to fill out her clothes and has actually outgrown one of her newborn outfits so I decided to take the plunge and begin today.

I have gathered a bunch of diapers, covers and snappies, but something I didn’t take into consideration is where I am going to put the diapers after they have been used. Sure, I thought about this months ago as I was researching and gathering materials, but I never did find that something I was looking for.
So lesson #1, don’t begin cloth diapering until you have a place to dispose of them, until laundry day. I will have to figure this one out tomorrow. For now they are piling up on her changing table.
Lesson #2, put the right size diaper on the poor kid. The first diaper cover I put on her was a size medium. Needless to say, it was too big and she had a very leaky first cloth diaper experience. I have found the size small and newborn diaper covers that I have and now hopefully they will work a little better.
The first diaper/cover we are sporting is made of PUL fabric, which is a waterproof material. This cover has Velcro to hold it in place. Since a traditional cotton diaper must be used with this type of diaper cover I opted to use a snappi, in place of diaper pins. So far so good, actually so far okay. I think it is going to take some practice to get these to work as planned. I looked all over to find a place I could purchase snappies locally. I wasn’t able to find any so I turned to ebay. I was able to purchase a package of 10 for $1.00, with shipping it was around $7.00. Which is good because they typically cost $4-6 a piece. Here is a diagram of how a snappi works. A bit tricky, but much easier to maneuver than diaper pins.
Stay posted to see how things go as I try it out over the next little while.

I am not sure how Daisylyn feels about all of this cloth diaper experience... you fill in the blank_______________!

I think she's saying, "Diapers don't thrill me - - -when do I get some cute red shoes like cousin Kallie?"
