Gardening Fun...

I have been thinking about gardening a lot lately and I purchased seeds and a composting bin a few weeks ago and I have been anticipating getting things started.

I had my nephew Treyson come over a week ago to help me finish raking up leaves that were in our play area and start filling the compost bin. We also did a little weeding and prep in the front yard. With my research about compost bins you have to have so much brown waste (leaves) and so much green waste (grass clipping, and certain kitchen waste) along with heat and the right amount of water to get things moving.

I still have more research to do on composting yard waste, but I look forward to the learning and using the compost in the future in our flowerbeds and our garden beds.

Today I got out in the garden beds and got a good start at weeding. I need to go over them again before we plant our seeds and starter plants. I imagine if I don’t have the baby soon I will be out doing more yard work if the weather permits.

Starting seeds…

I am all about being thrifty, as I was searching some gardening blogs I came across a blog that gave suggestions to spend little or no money to get a garden started. It gave suggestions to start your own peat pots out of toilet paper rolls and sharing seeds with others.

Every year I end up buying new seeds. This year I am passing along my extras so they will go to use rather than to waste (although I have re-used seeds the second year and that usually works too).

Pictures from my garden starts:
Recycled Peapots....

Cut toilet paper rolls in half.

Cut 5-6 slits

Bend in, to make a base.

And tape.

My recycled green houses for my seedlings. Lettuce box and an Applebees to go box.

I used a pencil to poke the seeds into the soil.

Cilantro for my "salsa" garden.

Onions for my "salsa" garden

Other seeds I will plant directly into the soil. I can't wait to try out the colorful carrot variety. I ended up planting a few lettuce seeds today as well.

I love your starter "pots". Very clever. Looks like some yummy salsa in embryo!
